Based on the following criteria, nine public universities and three private universities in China have been selected as the case study universities for this project.

       The Criteria for Participating Public Universities from the 985/211 Group

1. At least one with a major merger
2. At least one without a merger
3. At least one formerly private (before 1949)
4. Geographic balance
5. Balance of knowledge areas
6. Willingness of institution

       The Criteria for Participating Private Universities

1. At least one purely private
2. At least one established in collaboration with a foreign education provider
3. At least one second-tier independent college affiliated to a public university
4. Geographic balance
5. Balance of disciplinary coverage in curriculum
6. Willingness of institution

      We have developed strong collaborative relationships with the selected twelve Chinese universities. Most of these case study universities are enlisted on the Project 985 or Project 211, including a minority one. In the private sector, there are three well-established private universities from Zhengzhou, Xi'an and Nanchang. The twelve universities are situated in representive geographical areas in China, i.e., eastern, central, western and northeastern areas.
